Roma Dance and Fitsteps Project

Between September and November 2016, twenty-two Roma girls took part in our Roma Dance and Fitsteps Project.

The project was funded by the Sportivate programme at Sport England.

The weekly dance classes consisted of 45 minutes of traditional Roma dance instruction followed by a 45-minute Fitsteps class. Fitsteps is a dance exercise class inspired by the show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and teaches steps from the Jive, Quickstep, Tango and more!

There are some photos from the classes below and more in our Flickr album:

As part of the project six of the girl took their Introduction to Dance Fitness Course.

Four of the girls, along with their tutor Ewelina, were also invited to perform at Bloomsbury Festival on 22nd October. They were accompanied by Roma musicians Benjamin and Roberto.

On 16th November we held a prize giving evening attended by some of the girls who participated in the project.

Our Fitsteps tutor said:

“I’ve loved watching the confidence grow in the girls over the past 8 weeks and seen how much they’ve come along in their dance technique. They’ve always been so welcoming and eagar to work hard and learn something new each week. I hope they all continue to remain active and become the future Strictly Come Dancing stars. Good luck and remember me when you’re famous.” (Rhiannon)

Congratulations to all the girls who participated in the project!!

A big thank you to our dance instructors Ewelina Pawlowska and Rhiannon Sparrow of ParkRow Dance.

And thank you to our generous host Altmore Children’s Centre, our project partner Exercise Movement and Dance and our funder Sport England.
